What is its purpose?
The principal active interventions to reduce mother-to-child infection depend on knowledge of HIV status. The indicator therefore assesses the proportion of women who during their last pregnancy were counselled about HIV, were tested and received the results.
How to Collect and Analyse the Required Data
Collect the following data by conducting individual interviews with a representative sample of mothers of children aged 0-23 months:
RECOMMENDED SURVEY QUESTIONS (Q) AND POSSIBLE ANSWERS (A)
Q1: During any of the antenatal visits for your last pregnancy, did anyone talk to you about getting tested for the virus that causes AIDS?
A1: yes / no / does not remember
(ask the following question only if the previous answer is YES)
Q2: Were you offered a test for the virus that causes AIDS as a part of your antenatal care?
A2: yes / no
(ask the following question only if the previous answer is YES)
Q3: I do not want to know the results, but were you tested for the virus that causes AIDS as a part of your antenatal care?
A3: yes / no
(ask the following question only if the previous answer is YES)
Q4: I would like to repeat that I do not want to know the results, but did you get the results of the test?
A4: yes / no
To calculate the indicator’s value, divide the number of respondents who replied YES to all four questions by the total number of interviewed women (exclude those with the “does not remember” answer). Multiply the result by 100 to convert it to a percentage.
Important Comments
1) Disaggregate the data by location (rural/ urban), socio-economic characteristics (wealth quintile, education level) and mother’s age.
